Pasay and UP: Working towards community health workers development

PRIMARY HEALTH CARE TRAINING
New community heath workers are being recruited and trained for accreditation using the DOH-prescribed PHC curriculum to improve the current coverage wherein BHWs are present in only 41% of 201 Pasay City barangays. This is a joint project of the CHO, the Pasay BHW Federation and the UP

MONTHLY CONTINUING EDUCATION OF HEALTH WORKERS
Yearly series of health center-based monthly lecture-workshops for community health workers facilitated by third year medical students discussing current health and development topics chosen by the BHWs themselves.

INCOME-GENERATING PROGRAMS FOR BHWS
Part of strengthening the BHW Federation is giving them opportunities to generate funds for their own organizational and personal needs

SAFEKIDS CAMPAIGN
Project of the UP-CBHP and BHW Federation with SafeKids-Philippines:
10 high-risk schools are made safer as pupils, parents, barangays, and Parents-Teachers Associations are made more aware of pedestrian and road safety issues plus provision of zebra crosswalks, road barriers, and roving brgy. tanods looking after children walking to and from school. Pedestrian safety education now beginning to be incorporated in the Makabayan subject.

THE BARANGAY HEALTH WORKERS FEDERATION AS A PEOPLE’S ORGANIZATION
Strengthening the Barangay Health Workers Federation from 11 BHW Associations at the Local Health Center level, a SEC-registered organization, with by-laws and functional membership structure, to represent the voice of the volunteer health workers in decision making processes in the city. Through leadership capacity enhancement activities, the UP assists the BHWs in demonstrating inherent skills in advocating for representation in health decision making in the City Health Board and skills in health project management
